With the ever-growing concerns about our environment and the ongoing issue of climate change, we firmly believe that sustainable living is the way forward for the good of future generations to follow. A big step in this direction is dealing with the way we currently dispose our waste and its impact on the environment.
Thus, BIOMASS was developed. Led by a team of environmental professionals and engineers, we’re here to provide a more efficient disposal solution for landscape and organic waste. Through our various biotechnological methods, we aim to help reduce our carbon footprint and make our planet cleaner and safer for everyone.
Proper waste management is extremely important for any city as inadequacies can have severe implications on the health of its citizens, the environment and its economic development.
Currently, in the state of Penang, about 4,225 tonnes of waste ends up in designated landfills every day. It’s estimated that 60-80% of this is organic largely consisting of kitchen waste.
This inadvertently creates a big problem because, when dumped into landfills, organic waste undergoes anaerobic decomposition (due to the lack of oxygen) and generates methane. When released into the atmosphere, methane is detrimental to the environment as it is 21 times more potent a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide and contributes to global warming. In fact, landfills are the largest man-made source of methane (37% globally).
Our aim is to minimise the environmental impact caused by organic waste going into landfills by re-using this valuable resource.
Waste that comes in to our facility is sorted into two categories:
The biodegradable waste is then further sorted into two categories:
Finally, once nature has done its job, we are left with these wonderful end products:
The wonderful end result of our organic waste processing here at BIOMASS is high-quality compost, fertilizer and animal feed that are rich in nutrients and totally organic.
Our organic products are ideal for farming because they nourish the soil and livestock naturally, creating a sustaining environment without any harmful chemicals.

Located on-site at BIOMASS, our Experimental Gardens are a great learning centre for visitors to see firsthand how we transform organic waste into compost, fertilizer and animal feed, and how they can be effectively used for farming.
Learn how we turn fly larvae into protein-rich animal feed at our Black Soldier Fly feeding farm. Discover how well our compost and fertilizer work on plants and trees in our living garden.
Our Experimental Gardens are open to all visitors from Mondays to Fridays throughout the year, except on Public Holidays. Advanced appointments are recommended for large groups. Please contact us for details.
